Introduction

1.    History

School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Guangzhou University was formerly known as Department of Architecture and Department of Environmental Art of Western School of South China Construction University established in 1991. The school was a common higher undergraduate school under the provincial and municipal management. It was divided into Eastern School and Western School and had many undergraduate majors including architecture, industrial and civil construction, urban construction, water supply and drainage engineering and highway and urban road engineering. Eastern School recruited students from Guangdong Province, while Western School recruited students from Guangzhou City. Western School of South China Construction University became the granting unit of bachelor's degree in 1995.

In July 2000, Western School of South China Construction University was integrated in the new Guangzhou University and School of Architecture and Urban Planning was established on the basis of Department of Architecture and Department of Environment Art.

2.    Teaching

According to the guiding school running ideology of Guangzhou University of "learning widely and advancing with the times", combined with the professional characteristics of the School of Architecture, it should adhere to the concept of quality-oriented education, lifelong education and individualized education, strengthen organic integration of general education and professional education, humanity-based education and science-based education and quality-oriented education and vocational education, firmly establish the basic orientation of “serving the local urban and rural construction based on Guangzhou and aimed at Guangdong", keep professional development adaptive to local economic and social development with developing comprehensive practical ability and innovation ability as the core, establish the education system combined with registration system, that can better reflect local culture, adapt to needs of regional economic and cultural development and local urban construction, and explore training model of professional and innovative application-oriented talents.

3.    Subjects

The school has three level-1 disciplines including architecture, urban and rural planning and landscape architecture, which mutually support and complement in the field of directions, thus forming the urban and rural construction disciplinary group with a more reasonable discipline structure. Meanwhile, they intersect and support with civil engineering, geography and environmental engineering disciplines in our university to form a more complete human living environment disciplinary group.

Under the three level-1 disciplines, the school offers four undergraduate majors (directions) including urban and rural planning (five years), architecture (five years), landscape (five years) and architecture (landscape architecture direction, four years), and the program for master degree of two level-1 disciplines including architecture and urban planning. In terms of Master of Architecture, it has three level-2 discipline directions including architectural design and theory, architectural history and theory and architectural technology and science. Students are enrolled in Master of Urban and Rural Planning according to level-1 discipline.
